Remembering William Scheide, Founding Trustee

by William Storrar

The Center of Theological Inquiry remembers with thanksgiving the life of Dr. William H. Scheide, a founding trustee who died peacefully at home in Princeton on November 14th, 2014, in his one hundredth year.  Bill Scheide was a distinguished musicologist, bibliophile, philanthropist, humanitarian, and Presbyterian churchman. His support for so many causes - music and the arts, civil rights and social justice, rare book collecting and scholarship, the Church and theology - was without peer.

When James I. McCord first planned to establish an interdisciplinary research center for theology, he turned to his friend Bill Scheide for support and guidance. Scheide was a founding trustee of what became the Center of Theological Inquiry in 1978. He continued to serve on the Board until 2012, an unbroken record of service over 34 years.  On becoming an Emeritus Trustee, Bill was delighted that his wife Judith joined the CTI Board in her own right as a trustee who shared his vision for theological scholarship and commitment to the Center he held dear. His legacy at CTI will continue to be remembered with gratitude through the William H. Scheide Fellowship in Theology that he endowed to support scholars in residence.
